The retail wars are on. Again.
Word on the street is that West Farms Mall is taking the next punch in the battle of the malls. They tried their hardest to stop Blue Back Square from becoming a reality, and as a result, they're now they're facing a potential law suit in the millions. Not to mention the millons of dollars they spent in a public relations effort to stop Blue Back Square from developing. Ouch.
So what now? Well, we've heard that West Farms plans to expand and add a new wing that will feature high end brand names like Tiffany, Louis Vuitton and others in an attempt to regain the crown. Oh, and what New England malling destination would be complete without a Dunkin Donuts.
It should be interesting to see how things play out over the course of this, but the score so far seems to be Blue Back Square 1, West Farms 0.

What Taubman/Westfarms should do is build a new mini-mall that is high end, in downtown Hartford. I'm not sure Westfarms is the right atmosphere for a Tiffany or Louis Vuitton. Think JC Penney, Sbarro, and Sears across the street. Downtown has all those high paid business folks during the day who carry the Louis bags and wear Tiffany, and the folks visiting the conventions at the Connecticut Convention Center have expense accounts they are just waiting to spend. Build it on the lot facing the Capitol between the old YMCA and the Bond Hotel. Northland will be building some pricey condos on the Y site. It would be a perfect fit.
Agreed. More retail in Downtown Hartford!! (And a starbucks that's open past 2pm on Saturday).
